Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Beary Colourful BOM?

On the 1st of each month in 2018 I will be releasing a teddy bear appliqué pattern  in a colour of the month. These appliqués are designed so that the set can be used to make a child’s bed-size quilt. Each bear also celebrates a life skill that you might like to bless a child in your life with. Each bear appliqué is approximately 13″x10″ in size.

Is the Beary Colourful BOM free?

Yes. While the BOM is running in 2018, all the bear appliqués will be available for free on Clever Chameleon. After the conclusion of the BOM the Beary Colourful quilt pattern will be available for sale.

Are there prizes?

Yes, but not specifically for the Beary Colourful BOM. Beary Colourful is part of a bigger initiative called the 2018 Monthly Color Challenge, run by Patterns by Jen. Each month there are sponsors and an opportunity for you to enter for a prize by linking up a project in the colour of the month. If you choose to do the Beary Colourful BOM, your bear in that month’s colourway definitely qualifies!

How do I get the bear patterns?

On the first of every month I will publish a blog post containing a link to the new bear pattern. Look for the bear picture with the superimposed writing. Click on that picture or the link below it and you will be taken to a pdf pattern that you can download and print.

I noticed you mentioned trapunto. What is trapunto?

Trapunto is the name given to the technique of adding an extra layer of batting to a quilt element so that it is more padded than the rest of the quilt. I place batting under my work when I am sewing my appliqué to the backing fabric. Then I trim the batting back to just the shape of the bear. After this I can treat the block as I usually would, and in the finished quilt the bears are double batted.

I am a beginner. Can I do the Beary Colourful BOM?

Of course you can. There are some adjustments you might like to make, but ultimately we all learn best by just giving it a go. If you look through my blog since January, you will see that people of all skill levels doing the bears and sharing, and you will be just as welcome.

How do I make sure I don’t miss any bear patterns?
