Love with a Twist: Udderly Unique

Udderly Unique cow balloon appliqué by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Holy Cow! We are Finished!!

Love with a Twist is done and dusted! Can you believe it? Last month we finished all the blocks for the Throw size versions of Love with a Twist. However, to complete the Twin size quilt top we need one more block. The last bonus block.

Today we unveil our last block, and it is a balloon cow. Udderly amazing! And a little bitter sweet. It’s been so much fun. Read on to collect your cow balloon appliqué pattern. Also, make sure you’ve collected the whole Love with a Twist appliqué set. They are only free to download until the end of the year, so milk it for all it’s worth!

Now that we are done, double check your collection!

The Love with a Twist series will not be free forever. They are scheduled to be removed at the end of the year to make way for our third annual quilt along. I’m feeling bullish that we can go another round in 2020, although I haven’t picked a theme yet. Suggestions welcome! If you’d like to steer my thinking, now’s your chance.

Also, if you have been collecting all the files the instant they are released, you may want to check that you have the latest versions of them all. Some that I remember changed are the two instruction files, and the Fabulous Fish, all of which were updated along the way for various reasons. If in doubt about anything, don’t have a cow. Just grab them (all) again.

On second thoughts, do have a cow! Cows don’t get much happier than this! This one’s got no beef with anyone.

About the Love with a Twist Balloon Cow Appliqué Block

Today’s Udderly Unique balloon appliqué is a bonus block, only required for the twin-size quilt. Our cow is Block 11 and sits on the right hand edge in between the pig and the flamingo of the Twin quilt.

**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****

What you will need to make the (raw-edge appliqué) Udderly Unique block:

If you have not pre-constructed your quilt top, you will need background fabric for your appliqué:

To make Block 11 for the twin size quilt you will need a background fabric piece of 17″ x 16″. This measurement allows a half inch trimming allowance.

You will also need:

  • one main fabric (10″ x 15″) for the cow’s body. A second fabric for the ears and tail (4″ x 5″) and a third for the horns and udder (4″ x 5″). My cow was made from Island Batik fabrics from the Ditty collection, given to me by Island Batik.
  • a scraps of black fabric for the eyes and nostrils, and a bigger scrap of white for the eyes and muzzle.
  • fusible paper-backed fabric adhesive , approx. 20″ x 10″
  • thin batting for trapunto or your favourite stabiliser for stitching (optional)
  • general tools and notions: sewing machine, iron etc, teflon ironing sheet or non-stick paper, small sharp scissors, pencil, quilting pins, grease-proof/tracing paper, machine embroidery or sewing threads for appliqué and embroidery.

How to put together the Cow Balloon Appliqué

Trace your appliqué shapes directly onto the backing paper of your fusible adhesive. Fuse the shapes to the back of your fabric, according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Then cut out each shape and remove the backing papers. They go together as follows:

Step 1

Assemble the 3-page layout diagram supplied and cover with an ironing sheet/non-stick paper. Position appliqué pieces U1 to U5 and U7 in place and secure them temporarily by touching them briefly with the tip of a hot iron (or tack down with a small appliqué iron).

Step 9

Make your bovine happy with eyes, nostrils and penciled mouth.

Step 10

Give your appliqué a thorough pressing and fuse to your background fabric.

Then stitch your appliqué cow down using your favourite method. The sample I have shown uses free-motion straight stitching over a low-loft polyester batting. I layer my appliqué over the polyester batting and secure with quilting pins. Then I stitch around my shapes 5-6 times to secure them thoroughly. And finish by removing the excess batting with curved blade scissors/snips.

  1. Well I checked all of my pattern downloads for the balloon animals, so hopefully over the winter months some of them will finish up in a quilt for someone special.
This month two of my family members are in Australia visiting their Aussie family. Yesterday Charly sent back a picture of a number of kangaroos playing in their yard. They are on the Gold Coast. I am fascinated. Since you are setting out on a new adventure away from the city, maybe the next quilt a long might include some of the animals and or birds from your new spot? It’s an idea. Thanks for sharing with us all of your talent. I’m among those who love your posts, and appreciate all your work

  2. Oh how sweet. Reminds me of the cow I had. She was the sweetest happiest cow. I would go and lay against her side and read and read. And she would not move until I did. Once at a fair, I fell asleep on her side. Some reporters came and took pictures and my brothers were more than happy to tell them all about me and Burgandy Rose. We were in the newspaper. My claim to fame. LOL
Thank you so much for this last year with these wonderful and unique appliques. I love them all.
And I really appreciate all the hard work you have put into each of them. Thank you.
May you and yours have a fabulous Thanksgiving

  3. Dione, you are the bomb!! Thank you SEW much for this adorable pattern and these cute little balloon animals! I just love them and hope to start making them soon! I’m glad you reminded us to check because I had missed a couple of them somehow! Thanks again for all your hard work. And when you get ready to write up those pirate patterns, I’ll be first in line to test for you! LOL Enjoy your next year!

  4. This was so much fun! Suggestions for 2020….
Gnomes, Christmas Santa Village, teddy bears,

  5. Holy Cow is right! You made it and a whole year of bursting balloon awesomeness! Congrats.

  6. Hi Dione, I have diligently been saving these patterns with every intention of starting them… I haven’t yet but do intend to! I just wanted to say Thank You for all the work that you have put into creating these patterns and sharing them for free. Happy Sewing!!

  7. Just a quick thank you for the pattern, it is wonderful! I’m still perpetually running behind . . . have 2 quilting classes that have ended, and I’m still catching up, and another on the go, that I was up to date (at least until next Tuesday, when I will be a month behind). So many things to do and so little time!! And I still have a quarter to send to Australia – they changed the postal rates when I wasn’t looking, and I will have to get to the post office – will you still get it if you have arrived in the outback?? I have no idea how you can blog, quilt, answer all the postings, and do all the things associated with a family – I vaguely remember getting more done before I packed in work – now it is more 2 steps forward and 6 back. Anyway, enough of my complaining, it really isn’t that bad – more importantly, I’m really looking forward to your changes for 2020, it has been a wonderful year blowing up balloons with you!

  8. Dione,
Thank you so much for this adorable collection. I don’t have any suggestions for a theme for 2020, but I am so looking forward to your inspiration.

Happy Holidays, may the Lord continue to bless you and yours.

  9. This has been one of my favorite all-time block of the months to visit each month and see what’s new. Each pattern brings such a warm smile to my face and the anticipation of choosing fun fabrics to make each animal come to life. I’ve truly enjoyed it and I will definitely miss it. I always look forward to visiting your blog and am excited to see what the future brings. Many Hugs!!!
