Musical panda appliqué by Dione of Clever Chameleon

It’s the day for the last bear of the Beary Colourful BOM and we are going out with much fanfare. Make way for the Black and White (Panda) Bear of Making Music!

The first of December and time to be looking forward to all the festivities of Christmas and New Year. Time for parades and lights and decorations and special foods and music. And what better way to express joy in black and white than with music?!

Beary Colourful Bear BOM

Don’t let this month’s colours fool you – Black and White Bear is in the mood for celebration! He is going to party long and loud, and everyone’s invited! Brass band big, that’s his ideal…. his birthplace (Adelaide, SA) has one of the biggest Christmas pageants in the world and he is all set to be next year’s opening act! Please welcome the very formal yet joyous Black and White Bear of Making Music to the Beary Colourful family. He’s expecting much applause!

The twelfth and last bear in the Beary Colourful Quilt BOM series is hoping you have found much joy in this pattern series. Add this  bear to your collection to kickstart your Christmas/holiday season. And then go check out the rest of the 2018 Monthly Color Challenge posts for other ideas of how to celebrate black and white colours and enter for December’s Monthly Color Challenge prize.

The Black and White Bear of Making Music

The Black and White Bear is hoping you’ll catch a big dose of holiday spirit in the next few weeks. Whether Christmas comes for you as a bright patch in winter or as a lazy scorching summer shut down, Making Music Panda thinks that music is the one thing that will likely be found everywhere. Different tastes, different cultures, different traditions, different climates….. December is many different things to all of us. But whether we play it or listen to it, traditional or modern, music is a big feature of this time of year.

Black and White Ted has a little music score on his tummy because he thinks music is just a kind of colour spectrum that we can’t see with our eyes. It can convey mood and many other things besides, just as colour can. And like colour, we each have our musical preferences too.

If the treble clef appliqué is too tricky to cut out/appliqué, consider embroidering it on instead. Or leave it off and add more notes…… at Clever Chameleon I always encourage you to make my designs your own…. so make up your own little tune for Panda’s belly.

What you will need to make the Panda Bear block

    • Fabric for the background of the block. Each bear block will require a base fabric square of at least 13.5″ by 17″ to allow leeway for trimming.
    • Thin batting for the trapunto layer if you wish to do the trapunto step. I use a polyester batting of 1/8th inch loft. You will need approximately 11″ x 15″.
    • Fusible paper-backed fabric adhesive (for example vliesofix). 15″ x 12″ will be required for the Black and White bear.
    • Black fabric scraps for the main sections of the bear and the music score. The whole bear requires the equivalent of 8″ x 12″ of black and white fabric. But he is built from pieces, so you can use multiple smaller scraps if you need.
    • White/light colour fabric scraps for the head, muzzle and tummy,  5″ x 12″. Or 10″ x 12″ if shadowing bothers you and you’d like to make the white components double layered (see the Red Bear post for a more detailed discussion of the shadowing problem).
    • Various coloured small fabric scraps for eyes, nose, mouth, foot pad and trumpet.
    • Machine embroidery or sewing threads to match your appliqué fabrics.
    • General tools: sewing machine, iron etc, teflon ironing sheet or baking (parchment)  paper, small sharp scissors, pencil, chalk/washout fabric marker, quilting pins, black permanent acid-free marker.
    • Optional but helpful: curved blade embroidery snips

How to make the Making Music Black and White Bear

Step 1

Start by laying a piece of parchment (baking) paper over the supplied appliqué layout template.

Tack down the legs, left arm and ears onto the parchment paper with a hot iron.

That’s it. Give your appliqué a good press and carefully transfer it to your background fabric

Secure the edges of your appliqué using your favourite method. Don’t forget to stitch in the facial details, the trumpet outlines, music note stems and the staff lines.

Teres has already finished her quilt…. 9 bears into a baby quilt. The remaining three bears will be pillows. Aren’t her bears terrific?! Thanks for sharing, Teres.

  1. this has been the best of all monthly goodness and Mr December is wonderful.I truly hope when we have all finished the very beary bears next year will have another series to follow on
xxx to you all in Adelaide.

  2. Thanks so much for this alternative to blocks. I truly enjoyed it and actually wish you would continue with the bears for at least another year (need a larger quilt) or maybe another animals or critter. Thanks again!

  3. Dione, this bear is adorable!! My little D-man will LOVE him!! His Peeps (my hubby) plays trumpet (though he’s never heard him play!!) and I play keys and bass guitar, so I may add a bass clef sign instead of that treble clef!! Thanks for all these wonderfully adorable bears!!

    1. Oh…another thought…he would be perfect with that trumpet and adorned with some purple, gold and green for Mardis Gras!!!

  4. I LOVE bears; and, this collection has really touched my heart. Like others, I wish this series would continue. Thank you for sharing these delightful bears with us.

  5. Thanks sooo much Dione. This has been my favorite BOM this year and I really hate to see it end. So if you want to continue in the New Year, it would really be fantastic! Just saying.

  6. Since I’ve already done 12 bears (I didn’t read correctly and #12 is pink), but I LOVE panda bears… this one will go on the back of the quilt. I’d love to put it right in the middle but since I suck at math, I’ll use it as part of the label.

  7. Hi Dione! Oh, this guy has got to be my favorite. Music and black and white – what a fabulous combination. This whole series is just great. You did such a nice job on this, and how nice are you to offer these patterns to us for free. {{Hugs}} Happy Happy Sunday to you! ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. Gorgeous bear to finish Dione 🙂 What a fabulous quilt! I am hoping that this will be a 2019 make for me – with plenty of grandies to sew for I know it will be a hit 🙂 It’s been a great sew-along, even though I didn’t sew along!

  9. I have enjoyed this block of the month Dione, it’s been fun to see each month’s new bear and learning about the trapunto applique technique. I am looking forward to your future projects.

  10. Hi!
This has been so much fun. My first attempts of appliques. I´m so proud to have my quilt shown in your blog! Baby Elvis mother is very happy with the quilt. So happy that she asked me to continue with the bear-theme for his room to be. Bears 10-12 is going to be pillows for other childen but now I´m going to do nr 10-12 for Elvis as well. Maybe 2 pillows and 1 “painting”.
I wish you and your followers a happy new year from Sweden!

  11. I am so sorry I missed the Color Bears Quilt Along. Any idea when the pattern will be available for purchase?
