Dancing a Jig to a little Ditty: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Ditty fabrics from Island Batik colour scheme at Clever Chameleon

Introducing Ditty

Ditty is the name of one of Island Batik’s latest fabric releases. The colours are as cute as their name… Kind of a pastelly sunset. Actually, I don’t easily recognise them as pastels but I guess that is what they really are, since they are nowhere near colour-saturated. Is there such things as bright pastels? If there wasn’t, there is now.

I received 10″ precut squares of Ditty and two pieces of yardage from the collection in my Island Batik Ambassador allowance. I hope you have been following along and already know what I am making from some of it…. but let’s have a look in more detail. And I will show you what is in the parcel Accuquilt sent me too as part of the Island Batik Ambassador program. Of course it arrived the instant I stopped waiting for it…. that is the way it always works, right?! Right.

In fact, let’s look at the new Accuquilt toys first

Accuquilt GO! Cutter Ultimate System

As part of the Island Batik Ambassador program this year I have been given, at no cost to me, an Accuquilt Ultimate Fabric Cutting System. It’s for me to use in my April Ambassador challenge and whenever else it suits. Here’s what’s in the box:

Accuquilt GO! Cutter Ultimate System
There is a GO! Cutter in a signature green drawstring bag. A 2.5″ strip die and matching mat. An 8″ QUBE die set. A die pick for removing trapped threads from dies. And a pattern book by Eleanor Burns.

Let’s have a closer look at everything.

Here are the GO! Cutter, strip die and 8″ QUBE out of their wrappings. I will show you the cutter in more detail when I use it.

Here is a snapshot of Eleanor Burns’ book. Because it is for the four different QUBEs, I was worried that three quarters of it would be irrelevant. I was delighted to see it is set out so every project is listed in the four sizes, so I can use any or all of it.

The 8″ QUBE

The 8″ QUBE is packaged in this cute little drawer set. It makes me feel 10 years old again, taking me back to when cute little plastic desk caddies were all the rage! Fun.

Inside each of the bigger partitions are four dies neatly tucked away. FYI I didn’t cry when I opened these after all. What I did do was a funny little happy dance that must have looked quite strange to the cat and made me laugh at myself. But if you tell anyone, I will deny it.

These unfold to reveal dies, block pattern cards, an information CD, another pattern booklet and a small cutting mat.

And one last look with more packaging removed.

I was up late last night….. with a sudden urge to design my quilt for April’s Accuquilt challenge. I was totally inspired by something on those pattern cards, but you will have to wait and see! My diagram is all done, and I can’t wait to cut and make it!

The Accuquilt GO! cuts a great tune. But now, back to our original Ditty…..

Ditty, oh pretty Ditty

In the interests of full disclosure, I will spell out that I have changed the tune of the Ditty I am supposed to play for you. You all know that the Chameleon walks to the beat of his own drum at the best of times, so this probably won’t surprise you. Simply put, I am using some of my Ditty fabrics in my Love with a Twist quilt. Which is not an official Ambassador challenge project, just an awesome personal one. So you may now refer to my Ditty ditty as the natty little number called the “Chameleon Sidestep”.

The Ditty fabrics featured in this post were supplied free to me by Island Batik. However, as always, all opinions offered are entirely my own. Please consider your own circumstances before deciding whether these beautiful colours are right for you.

When I saw the Ditty fabrics, I just knew they had to become a Love with a Twist quilt. So I sat down and carefully looked at all my challenges and all my Island Batik fabrics (including last year’s leftovers). Could I fit a Ditty version of Love with a Twist into a legitimate Ambassador challenge? Yes, if we waited until September….

September!? Heck No! That’s not an option, is it peeps?! Instead, I have decided to misappropriate some Ditty and still meet all my Ambassador obligations. Of course, I had better get this right, or else the Chameleon Sidestep might become more my “Ambassador Swansong”.

Lol, don’t worry, it’s going to be awesome. You are going to have eyeballs on Ditty fabrics regularly for months…. that’s gotta be way better for everyone than seeing it just once. Why would you only want to see Ditty just once anyway?! Exactly!

I can sing a rainbow…. a pastel rainbow… sing along with me

Here are my fabrics, I introduced to you previously. Ditty 10″ precuts (42 pieces) and 2 yards each of Apricot Paisley Tree and Custard Mini Dots.

For Love with a Twist, I have paired the Apricot Paisley Tree with Island Batik Shaved Ice Snowman to make the quilt top. Here is what it looked like once it was done. Shaved Ice Snowman was a more directional print than I realised, but once the appliqués are on and it is quilted, you will be hard pressed to notice.

Love with a Twist Twin size quilt with Ditty Apricot sashing.

Of course, I have started adding balloon animal appliqués to it now. You have already seen Dippy Dog from the pattern release.

I also remade the poodle balloon in Ditty… because the twin quilt calls for all the blocks from both throw-size versions.

And I have made our first February Love with a Twist block, Happy Hog out of Ditty too. Here’s a sneak peek.

I am just putting the finishing touches on that pattern and my intention is that you shall have it by the end of the week. How exciting. 🙂

In the meantime, let’s have a look at last week’s Colour & Inspiration feature

Brain injury quilt progress

Jen from de Jong Dream House linked up her first month’s progress on her brain injury quilt last week. Didn’t January fly by?! Jen has taken on quite a personal and vulnerable project with her flying geese quilt, showing people the cumulative effects of her good and bad brain days. This week the special Chameleon is all for you Jen!

  1. Oh, that AccuQuilt looks like it would be fun to play with! The colors of Ditty are so fresh and springy. Will be fun to see what you create with them.

  2. I’ve been following Love With A Twist. It is so adorable and cheerful with the fabrics you have chosen. Thank you for the linky party.

  3. Why are there so many songs about rainbows? Are the pastel on the o—ther siiide. (hehehe)
I love it. I have been tempted to sidestep with some of my Island Batiks also. But I am trying to be good for my first year. 😉

  4. Hi Dione! I think you have coined a new fabric phrase – bright pastels. I would say that Ditty definitely falls within that category – they look so fabulous. And that AccuQuilt system looks fabulous as well. I’ve been trying to talk Sue into using one but she is staying firm so far. I don’t know why?!! Accurate is just the beginning of why to me. ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. I enjoyed your post today. It has relieved some of the tension caused by a snowstorm which will continue for a couple more days. The purple poodle is adorable and the Ditty fabrics are fabulous.

  6. Awww…you are the sweetest! What a great way to start my day. My February column is all pointing down except one day. I’m off to a rough start, but I’m planning to sew today finally! Thanks for the boost!
