Dragon On: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

I’m on fire!

I’ve finished three assignments in one week and I’ve sewn down the remaining flowers onto the Lunarcy quilt. I even have a plan for finishing the flower centres, I think. Everything is on schedule for the Chameleon to be able to go AWOL for a few days very soon, touch wood!

Maybe my luck is holding because it is the week to unveil the Year of the Dragon appliqué block. My birth sign, and my favourite block on the Lunarcy quilt. Here he is…. one over-spec’d lizard.

The Chameleon knows a kindred spirit when he sees one. 😀

Year of the Dragon

Here is the ninth block in the Lunarcy series. The prospect of drawing a dragon terrified me, but it worked out ok. I love this guy.

Disclaimer: Island Batik supplied these fabrics to me free of charge to create the prototype Lunarcy BOM available here soon at Clever Chameleon for the remainder of 2020.

Here is the lantern I chose to make to accompany him.

That just leaves three more blocks. The Rooster, the Monkey and the Goat.

Other Quilting and Planning

It's a garden party sew along logo

I also had happy mail last night. Fabrics arrived from Northcott to make my block for the Garden Party Row Along. This will be happening at Seams to be Sew in September. So now I have some secret sewing to do. 🙂

Northcott fabrics

Northcott always generously sponsor the row along every year. Thank you Northcott! The fabrics I have for my row are: Essence (green 9025-76), Stonehenge (blue 39303-62) and Canvas (yellow 9030-51). I’ll be adding scraps of other colours from my stash.

What else have the kids and I been doing in our mid-year break?

Well, I have been working steadily through my assignments as planned last week, as well as the Lunarcy quilt. A bit of netball with the eldest using our new hoop we made from junk (a dried-prune tub, a tree guard and various bits of wire). When the wind allows, we have also had some play with our badminton set. We are finding that with the uneven ground and the prickles, games that require the equipment to stay in the air are the most satisfying.

We swapped last week’s pie in the sky plans for more down to earth activities such as campfire cooking…

Bread on a stick, lemonade scones on a stick, jacket potatoes, baked bananas and chocolate…. all the yummy stuff. Except marshmallows, and only because we don’t have any, due to some misguided responsible parenting when we last set foot in a shop. Apparently, 14 weeks ago, responsible parenting was still a thing! We won’t be making that mistake again next shopping trip. Here’s our jacket potatoes buried in the coals.

campfire

We’ve had plenty of opportunity to do campfires before, but haven’t. It has just seemed too much effort to jam them in between school activities and dinner/bedtime. When we finally got organised a few days ago, I joked to hubby that no doubt it would rain now. The sky was clear, I was just being silly. Next thing we knew…..

Rainbow at Arkaroola

Me and my big mouth! Every time I lit the fire for the next three days, it would suddenly drizzle. No lie. It has made for good sunsets though.

Sunset at Arkaroola

We seem to be past the curse today. Nice and sunny again. The bread dough is rising as I write, ready for me to publish this and head out for another stick-cooked snack. 🙂 if the sky stays clear tonight we might have a go at trying to see the moons of Jupiter later.

While I’m gone, feel free to share amongst yourselves….

You could head over to Wendy’s at Pieceful Thoughts. She’s been working on heaps of small cute projects. Including this adorable cat pincushion.

Another in the works: an owl.

Or claim yourself a spot at Gretchen’s place. The Chameleon has. Gretchen at Gretchen’s Little Corner has been making sleeping bags for lizards, but for some reason she is calling them needlebooks. The Chameleon finds that to be a bit of a sticking point…. He recommends that she rename them Cozy Cute Chameleon Convertible Cots as soon as possible. Other than that, he says they are perfect. Very good quality and very comfy.

There are plenty of opportunities to make yourself at home at Donnaleeq‘s place this week. Check out her beautiful Tilda House quilt. Don’t fall fowl of the birds though. I personally adore all the ducks and chickens and peacocks at Donnaleeq, but the Chameleon is suspicious. He suspects roosters eat a greater variety of things than just green tomatoes.

Finally, drop in on the Chameleon’s new internet friend. Allison at New Every Morning has been deliberately experimenting with colour. She has an interesting collection of Bear’s Paws on the go.

And that leads me to an important question…. can we bear to pause? After this week my schedule is going to be interrupted for a couple of weeks. I may get to blog next week, I almost certainly will not the week after. So, I’ll leave the Linky party open for the duration just in case, and we’ll play it by ear. Stay in touch!

Has your sewing machine been smokin’ this week?! Got something hot in the pipeline? Or are you working on something that’s dragon on?

Whatever it is, you’d better share it and keep us busy. Just now I found the Chameleon up to no good on the toilet. He was pretending to be a commode-o-dragon.

Spare us……

  1. Thanks for the highlight! I do enjoy your sense of humor – commode-o-dragon – hahaha! Nothing much productive to share this week; maybe today will be better. Hope you were able to enjoy a good campfire and no rain!

  2. I love all your stories and bits of whimsy. I also love how looking at something so simple and everyday can spur on an idea for quilting.
Ohh but I love your dragon, you did a fabulous job making him. All of your blocks are just wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

  3. I’m definitely working on something that’s dragon on…my guild challenge panel project! But, since we haven’t met since March, and not sure WHEN we will meet again, I am just lacking motivation to work on it. However, I am loving working on my Peace Village quilt!! Enjoy your AWOL days!! Your dragon block is really cute – not a scary dragon at all!

  4. Great photos and post. I love the dragon. I’ll have to google the foods you shared, baked banana’s and jacket potatoes? Thank you for the linky party, enjoy your explorations the next couple of week, I am off to educate myself on outback foods.

  5. Hi Dione, cooking on an open fire sounds great – especially if it’s cool in the evenings. I really hope that you get to enjoy some R&R with your family. Your dragon block and lantern are great! Take care.

  6. The needle books did turn out the perfect size for the chameleon but we don’t seem to have any of them around our farm. Your dragon block looks great! Enjoy the winter activities with your family. Happy stitching!

  7. Hi Dione! I’m glad you’re about to have a bit of a break. I hope fun things are planned and even if they’re not – just enjoy. Love the dragon block and yippee to having all those flowers sewn down. Take care and stay safe. ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. Commode-o-dragon, I laughed out loud. I can always count on you for some cheery banter. Enjoy your family time and come back refreshed.

  9. Oh my goodness, Commode-o-dragon! How funny! Love your dragon, with and without the commode!

Responsible parenting was a thing 14 weeks ago? I’m pretty sure we bought marshmallows on our first or second quarantine grocery trip back in March… Hey, we did a lot of grilling!
