It’s A Garden Party Row Along!

pigeon in a bird bath paper pieced quilt block designed by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Welcome to Day 6 of the “It’s A Garden Party” row along!

Please excuse the pigeon. He says he’ll be with us in a moment.

Once a year Marian of Seams to be Sew hosts an amazing event – a huge row along where lots of designers come together on one project. This year we have each designed a garden themed block for you to collect – mix and match them into a project that you love!

Garden Party row along

If you follow along with this event, you will find lots of beautiful gardening blocks, flower blocks, garden produce blocks and fun critters to choose from – some of which you might even prefer on a quilt than in your actual garden! And there are prize draws too. Come join the party, try out your luck in the prize draws, and collect your free copy of my block pattern today: Garden Bath Joy.

It’s one BIG Garden Party

Thank you to Marian of Seams to be Sew for again organising and hosting this annual row along. It is a highlight of my year, one of the events I particularly look forward to. This is my third year participating, but this year is slightly different for me….. I am actually making a quilt from my curated collection of the block designs. Isn’t 2020 still full of surprises?! You can see where I am up to in detail on that project in last Tuesday’s post here, but here’s a taste:

bird and flower quilt block

Once I’ve finished the whole project, I plan to put out simple instructions on how I have combined the blocks to make a small Spring garden sampler quilt. Including instructions for making the increased size of my own block as pictured. So make sure you are collecting all the patterns – if you like my sampler quilt and you have saved the block patterns, my plan is that you will be able to make one too. Stayed tuned to Clever Chameleon in October for that one.

A big thank you to Northcott

This year, like past years, Northcott has generously provided fabric to designers who wish to use it to make their demo blocks for this hop. I, for one, am always delighted to use Northcott fabrics, and this year I chose three fabrics for the majority of my paper-pieced block: 1/4 yd Stonehenge Graduations Lagoon, 1/4 yd Canvas Limoncello and 1/2 yd Essence Lime Twist.

Northcott fabrics have a lovely soft feel to them and their colours play nicely with my batik stash. I use batiks for appliqué as much as possible for their fray-free qualities. Thank you once again, Northcott, for supplying the main fabrics to piece my demo block. Most appreciated, they look wonderful.

My Pattern for You

When I heard that the theme for this year’s Row Along was to be “It’s a Garden Party”, I was inspired right out of the gate. Happy, happening quilts is what the Chameleon likes best – so I had no trouble coming up with ideas to capture the twin themes of gardens and celebrations. In the end I narrowed it down to the concept of our pigeon joyfully abluting. But then the question became… should I make an applqué pattern or try something different? Paper-piecing perhaps….?

Then I thought – why not do both? I could try my hand at designing a paper-pieced block, but use appliqué to add in the details. That would keep the design relatively simple. And then I thought of an added bonus… I could use my cross-over block to help bring a range of diverse blocks into one coherent sampler quilt. And so I arrived at the Garden Bath Joy block design, inspired to actually make a hop quilt. Win!

And so here we are! Garden Bath Joy finishes at 12″ by 18″, including the border that the appliqué flowers spill onto. The border gives you some leeway with the exact size that this block finishes at… if you need it slightly bigger or smaller to fit somewhere in a project, it’s super easy to just trim it the way you need.

**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size. Turn off “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on both US Letter and A4 paper. ****

The pattern comes with an optional sign post motif that you can appliqué to the left of the bird bath, like on this second version I’ve made from stash:

My first thought was to embroider the sign post with directions to a statue exhibit…. Afterall, what more could a pigeon want after a bath than a nice fresh statue?! But I will probably embroider my sign on the combined quilt with “Hello Spring”, or something to that effect. We’ll see. You can write whatever you want on your sign… perhaps a little note for the intended recipient, or a joke of your own. Context is everything, and I’m sure you are very creative.

  7. What a great block. I love watching birds bathe in our bird bath, so i immediately loved your block. Thank you for the pattern.

  8. I am crazy about the birds. Maybe I would make it with a cardinal. What do you think? Thank-you for the row.

  9. I absolutely love your pattern! I will probably be making a wallhanging with this pattern as well. Thank you!

  10. Oh you little outback wonder, you! Of course a birdbath is perfect for the garden! And this one is too cute. Love how your rows are coming along and can’t wait to see them all together.

  11. I love your panel! We can’t have a birdbath like that one because our horses will insist on rubbing their rumps on it and will knock it over. Grrr. A quilted one will be a happy substitution. Many thanks.

  12. The idea of visiting the statues after the bath – genius! Love your work and this is no exception.

  13. Such an original block. I love the birdbath and the colors you’ve chosen. I really like the idea of the little sign added to the second sample. Thank you for the pattern and thanks to the sponsors for their generous donations to this blog hop. A big thanks to Marian and each of the designers who are participating.

  14. You should have added a chameleon. What’s a garden without a chameleon. I am also hoping I will make some of the patterns into a quilt.

  15. This is such a fun block!!!! I love the pigeon! We have a few pigeons who have been in yard recently, but we have no fun bath for them. I really love the blocks you are combining into your quilt and can’t wait to see it all together!

  16. So pretty, I especially love the flowers edging over into the border area. Plus paper piecing with applique – both my favourite quilting methods. You never disappoint Dione, thank you so much.
