Bonus Post: What’s in the Box?

box from Island BAtik

Yesterday I let slip that my latest box of goodies has arrived from Island Batik, without showing you anything fun…..

I hope that wasn’t too unkind. At least you only had to wait a day to see inside. I had to wait nearly a week after I knew it had arrived! Oh, the excruciating anticipation of having a box languishing at the post office! A box of quilting supplies, no less. Full of surprises and free stuff! Worse than waiting for Christmas. But I’m feeling better now though, thank you for your concern.  🙂

Let’s have a look inside now shall we?

Oh, you mean unpack it? Ok, let’s do that too!

What’s in the box this time?

Island BatikIf you are newish around here, you might be wondering what the excitement is all about. Well, as a 2018 Island Batik Ambassador, I am supplied with a very generous amount of Island Batik products to show and tell, use, and then show and tell some more.  There is a whole network of Ambassadors, and we each get biannual shipments of the latest fabrics and accept fun monthly challenges to use and showcase them. This is the second 2018 box; you can find my first box here.

You can also find my finished Island Batik projects so far at:
February – Mini Quilt Challenge
March – Try a New Technique Challenge
April – Vintage Inspired Quilt Challenge
May – Playful Pillow Challenge
June – Modern Batik Challenge

But really, I know you want to see the new stuff! So without further ado…..

The box has pre-cuts. Lots of pre-cuts!

Island Batik pre-cuts

There is a pack of 10″ squares of Paisley Dots Brights, a pack of 10″ squares of Wild Things, and 2.5″ strips of London Fog. I am not so sure about the fitness of the name of the 2.5″ strips….. it totally belies how utterly beautiful these fabrics are! Well, I guess I won’t forget what they’re called now, anyway.

Since the London Fog fabrics are my favourites, let’s have a closer look shall we? The strips have been paired with two fabrics from the same line, and the darker of the two yardages is just Amazing. My bed neeeeeds these on it, so I will most certainly be having a look at the upcoming challenges to see what can be arranged. 🙂

Here are the 10″ squares with the plastic removed so I could touch them you can see them better.

Paisley Dot Brights……. preeeeeetyyyyyy rainbow! Chameleon Like!

And the Wild Things pack.

Do these colours remind you of anyone?

Hmmmm….. wonder how I can develop this connection further……?

The box also has plenty of yardage

There are three solid fabric cuts (grey, white and black) and a neutral yardage called “Custard”. It has faint light blue and green leaves running through it.  I may yet use some of it with the London Fog fabrics…… and some with Wild Things.

There are also 6 half-yard cuts from the Check It Out line

And a collection of bright stash builders. That centre teal batik has my name written all over it!.

And the box has other essentials too…… thread and batting

As well as the fabrics, there are again samples from Island Batik’s industry partners – HOBBS and Aurifil.

I am especially grateful for the opportunity to try these…. a queen-size HOBBS Heirloom Natural cotton-scrimmed batting (did I mention a quilt for my bed.?), and two throw-size HOBBS Tuscany Collection battings. One is 100% wool, the other is a cotton/wool blend. The wool one says it doesn’t hold creases and is ideal for show quilts….. well, we might just have to test that, mightn’t we?!

There is also a sample bag from AurifilUSA celebrating 10 years. Inside were several colour charts (always handy) and some more of their wonderful thread.

I received a subtly variegated 50 weight cotton in pretty orange and a sample pack of 7 different types of thread in green.

From right to left they are: 80WT cotton, 12WT cotton, 28WT cotton, 50WT cotton, 40WT cotton, 12WT Lana wool/acrylic blend, and cotton floss.

And last but not least…..

Like last time, there is a secret package…… fabrics that I cannot show you until they have been launched. But they are wrapped up very nicely so it would be a shame not to show you the parcel. 🙂

Surprise package of fabric

Since we can’t drool over these yet, did you catch up with what was in my surprise package from Box 1? It was a huge collection of fabrics from the Victoria and Albert line.

My upcoming July and August challenge quilts are featuring these beauties.

And of course, at least one quilt featuring the fabrics in that secret package.

Thanks for sharing my excitement today. I hope you’ve spied some fabrics you like, and that you’ll stick around the blog to see what I make of them over the rest of the year. And thank you Island Batik Team for another marvellous package.

  1. Great job on holding your breath and recovering when you finally got to the box! I, too, have the jungle set – but in the strip set and 2 coordinating fabrics. In your last entry, I thought for a moment you might be taking one of those creatures home, but a quilt would be a greaat way to remember the trip!

  2. I am left drooling this morning Dione. What a lot of fun you are going to have. If I lived a bit closer, I’d be over to visit and feel the fabrics. And the day of my birthday too, 17 wonderful bits and pieces to play with.

  3. Those paisley dot brights will make a beautiful new outfit for the chameleon!! LOL Beautiful fabrics – all of them!

  4. Oh, the loveliness of it all! I’m drooling all the way across the world. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to see your projects (and that secret stash)!!

  5. It looks like you have lots of inspiration in that bundle of goodies, look forward to your creations!!
