Lunarcy Quilt: Year of the Horse Block Release Day

Happy New Year! I hope that 2021 will hold many moments of friendship, colour and fun for you all. Rainbows all round.

Having said that, I’ve already had my first small 2021 “scare”….. New Year’s Day: the Chameleon dragged himself dejectedly out of bed, claiming that it was time he started acting his age and being responsible. No more silly internet posts for him! On closer inspection, I noticed he was off colour and a little bit hoarse.

Thankfully he was just pranking me and trying to stirrup trouble. Of course, I should have known better.

He’s always trying to be the centaur of attention! 😀

Stop foaling around, young Chameleon! We’ve got some serious Lunarcy to be getting on with – it’s time to release the Year of the Horse block.

I’m still unpacking boxes….

…and hatching an idea for my next BOM(ish)-quilt after we finish the Lunarcy saga. So I’ve not really got anything interesting to show you this week. I have decided to try to start setting short term goals for my sewing again however – to get things back on track after an extended time of wandering in the quilty wilderness. To keep me focussed I will try to keep up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal (OMG) again.

One caveat though. I know that January is a really bad month for me to start such things. The Australian summer school hols don’t finish until January 27 and so I usually get very little done before February. And then I feel like I am a month behind, which messes with my sewjo. So, to avoid all that but still get started, I am simply making the tiny goal of adding a hanging sleeve and a label to my Spring Garden Party quilt. That’s it. That is my OMG task for January. Tiny, but I’ll thank me later.

And now to the mane event….

Let’s celebrate the dawn of 2021 by releasing the Year of the Horse Lunarcy block.

If you were born after Lunar New Year in 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, 1942 or 1930 etc the Horse is your Chinese Zodiac animal and today I am releasing your special block. People born in the Year of the Horse are traditionally seen as bright and energetic, optimistic, romantic and passionate, friendly, determined and just a little impulsive. Go-getter, life of the party types!

Part Nine of the Lunarcy Quilt pattern is available to download via the button below. This new pdf supplies you with all the appliqué templates you’ll need to create the Year of the Horse appliqué and his Chinese lantern.

This quilt pattern is very kindly supported by Island Batik, who supplied all the fabrics to me for the sample. The fabrics I used are detailed in the pattern, and are all from their Foundations Basics and Blenders collections. This means that if you wish to use any or all of the same, they are still available through your favourite Island Batik stockist.

**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****

Inside the Year of the Horse pdf you will find the templates for the goat and his lantern, and also an appliqué placement key. The placement of the blossoms is given as a suggestion, but feel free to add as many or as few as you’d like.

The next release will be the Year of the Snake appliqué. Sssso ex-ssssiting.

The Lunarcy Quilt measures 75.5″ x 94″ and is designed for a single/twin bed. Part 1 of the pattern lists the fabric requirements and details how to put the quilt top together. It is your choice whether you prefer to do this before or after the appliqués. You can download Lunarcy Quilt Part 1 here. Part Two of the pattern is the Branches and Blossoms motifs used throughout multiple blocks. There will also be 12 animal appliqué files, of which today’s Horse is the seventh. You can still find the Rat pattern, the Pig pattern, the Dog pattern, the Rooster pattern, the Monkey pattern and the Goat pattern at their respective links. The remaining animals will arrive in this order: Snake, Dragon, Rabbit, Tiger and Ox.

I hope you will enjoy making something from this pattern and I’d love to see what you’ve made if you do. If there are any problems with the file, please let me know.

And, your weekly dose of Linky Inspiration….

Welcome to a new year of quilty inspiration from around the internet. I hope you’ll find lots of ideas in the colours and projects that the Chameleon’s friends are doing.

Kathleen’s got the feature in the bag this week. If you head over to Kathleen McMusing you will find a fantastic idea for making quilt project bags out of orphan blocks.

DONNALEEQ has a beautiful start on a new quilt – I love the colours in this background patchwork. There will be roses appliquéd on this in due course. In her post you will also find a rotary cutter recommend which might be of interest, especially if you struggle with hand pain.

And another scrap buster from Sew Yummy, this time in browns and beiges. Although the colours are not her favourites, this is a beaut. The consensus in the comments is that it transcends brown and has reached cinnamon (which is much classier and more appetising!).

Enjoy!

Now, can I ask you equestrian…?

  1. It’s no small thing for me to get a hanging sleeve sewn on, so I think that’s a great monthly goal for a month when full stop sewing isn’t going to happen. Have fun unpacking!

  2. Your quilt turned out beautifully. I collected and saved the patterns for a rainy day that has yet to come. Glad to see you blogging again and look forward to more.

  3. Hi Dione, glad you’re all safe at home – take some time to enjoy the summer hols. I love the horse (okay, I love them all), such an equestrian. It is such a stunning quilt.
You did a wonderful job on the Spring Garden Party Quilt too, it’s so nice to see colourful quilts. Like Esmeralda’ s Garden, you do such a lovely job from fabrics through to quilting – unfortunately, we still need posts like yours to cheer us all up, thank you!
This comes from Canada, where we are all locked in our stables again – except for those who think they know better, as the hospitals become more and more strained. Someone closed the stable doors to late, but I won’t insult the noble horse – he stayed put, and something disgusting escaped to meet its fate. Shame it is innocents that are infected that pay the price.
Sorry for the moan – everyone stay safe and healthy!

  4. Galloping along with your ideas and making laugh while reading your horse post! Thank you again for the feature. Glad the Chameleon has gotten back his colors. Happy January to you!

  5. Well, you certainly did pony up a lot of puns. Good to see you back in the saddle again. You’re wise to finish up the Spring Garden Party before Autumn arrives and the squirrels take over.

  6. Hi Dione:
Just loved your play on words! Quilting and photography aren’t your only talents. Glad to hear your trip was safe. All the best for 2021!

  7. A very punny start to the new year. Good luck with meeting your monthly goal (thanks for the reminder, I have 11 hours to set a goal!)

  8. Hi Dione, good for you for making a small but manageable January goal. I’m supposed to be finishing the quilt top of my son’s quilt…I’d better get to it soon! It would probably take me two full days of sewing but I don’t think that I should wait until the last minute. I really love your Spring Garden quilt. You did a wonderful job of making all of those blocks work together! Take care and good luck in January.

  9. Hanging sleeves are the bane of my quilting existence!! A necessary evil for shows! LOL This is my block as I was born in the Year of the Horse. This block is awesome!! Thanks! (not that all of your blocks aren’t!)
