Peacock Batik: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party

Peacock Feather Batik color scheme at Clever Chameleon

This week I’m crushing on  November’s fabric!

How do you like this peacock feather batik? Glorious, isn’t it? At least, it is to me. I bought this on a whim a while back, knowing that November’s Beary Colourful Bear would be teal.

2018 color challengeTeal is hands down my favourite colour. So I probably had stash I could have used for November’s teal challenge…. But. I love peacock feathers and this fabric had my name on it. I know at the time it was an impulse buy, and I had other priorities….. but I’m totally wondering: why did I only get half a metre!?!

Anyway, today I finished up my test Bear appliqués for November’s Beary Colourful  pattern, so I’ve been playing with this fabric for a couple of days now. It’s so pretty I just couldn’t wait until November 1 to share it with you.

And I ear that someone wasn’t concentrating hard enough when they were cutting out November’s test bears…. and now has two spare sets of bear parts to give away in a couple of weeks time…..

Let me explain.

My Mistake will soon be Someone Else’s Gain

Our family has encountered a couple of speed humps on the highway of life this last couple of weeks. And consequently, I have had a little trouble staying focussed in the sewing room at times. On one of those occasions, the Chameleon and I made a classic, rookie mistake. He forgot to un-reverse the bear appliqué pattern pieces before I cut them! Whoops. Scan N Cut CM900

Because I am now using my brother ScanNcut CM900 (amazing machine, affiliate link, you want one for Christmas!) to cut many of my appliqués, I now cut the pieces in the orientation they are designed in – not reversed as is traditional. But I still make the patterns reversed for you for easy hand tracing onto fusible web.

And I cut the wrong pieces. The reversed pieces. The problem with a fast cutter is that you can cut a lot of wrong pieces before your brain catches up!

Now. …. I could have just continued to make the bears in the reverse orientation. For sure. But then I would have had to fix the pattern to match my pictures….. otherwise I would confuse people. It was easier to just recut the correct pieces and make the bears as they were designed.

However, there is nothing inherently wrong with my reverse bear pieces, and if someone would like to make this bear in reverse from either fabric pile above, I will post them out. Come back here on the 1st of November to find out how to apply to rescue my backwards bears.

Teal peacock feather batik

This peacock feather batik fabric was bought by me from Spotlight, from their house brand range of batik fabrics (Spotlight is the Pacific region’s answer to Joann’s, for the curious Northern Americans among us.) I have no idea if this fabric is still available.

You’ve seen the Peacock Feather Batik Fabric, but You’ll have to Wait to see what November’s Bear is up to!

Eye hope you were not expecting me to show you November’s bear early…. that’s not going to happen!

He surely hasn’t the cheek to photo bomb my blog before his official debut…..

Hahaha. That’s enough spare bear parts for one day, let’s move on to our featured guests from last week’s linky party.

Jewelled Clever Chameleon logoThere were lots of amazing quilts for the Chameleon to choose from last week

There was a new quilt for baby Kai from my internet friend Lynn. A chocolate ice cream version of the Special Treats Bear to welcome to the Beary Colourful extended family. Two super designs from Denise of For the Love of Geese and Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts. A Halloween scare from Susan of Quilt Fabrication and an awesome jellyroll rug by Cherie of Cherie’s Quilting Journey.

And Jen of de Jong Dream House has been super busy again catching up on documenting her quilts from a couple of years ago. This quilt is just beautiful…. my favourite jewel colours in one of my favourite classic designs. And the backstory in the blog post is lovely too. This story is an all round ripper of a read and drool – don’t miss it!

  1. I’m loving that peacock feather batik too! Gorgeous!! Now you know, when you find fabric you really like, you need to be three times the amount you think you might need!! LOL Can’t wait to see what November Bear is up to and what colorful duds she/he is sporting!!

  2. My comment apparently did not go through, so here goes again! You can delete it if the other shows up!! Dione, you know if you see a fabric you like you MUST buy at least 3 yards/meters!! I think I would have purchased more of this!! Beautiful fabric! Teal, purple and lime green are three of my favorites!! I can’t wait to see what November Bear is up to and what gorgeous duds he’s sporting with this fabric!!

I looked up your machine, but is unavailable here in the US. My DH is getting me the newest Scan-n-Cut DX that is available here as a Christmas present! I’m excited. My LQS has them and I got to play with it a little after Ruler Club last week. I have an older Cameo Silhouette. This one is wireless and that’s awesome!! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas! LOL It will be much easier to cut appliques with. Thanks for sharing your sneak peek!!

  3. I probably would have purchased about 6 yards of that gorgeous fabric!! You tease… sneak peeks… hmmmm teal. I need to start searching the deep dark depths of the stash…

  4. That.Fabric. It is so gorgeous – teal and peacock feathers – what more could you ask for?

  5. Purple is my favorite color, but I seem to love quilting with teal and turquoise the most. I would have bought at least 2 years of the beautiful batik! Thanks for featuring my (purple and teal) Jewel Box!

  6. I do have some teal batik all saved somewhere!!! But my machine and where I use it will not be there for all of November!! It will be catch up for sure. We have Spotlight over here, and I have a birthday voucher still untouched, maybe time for a visit. I wonder if they have the same batiks here, last time I visited there was a good selection. Double scanned and cut, a bonus if you really wanted two.
