Those Crazy Aussies: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Jacana colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi, Oi, Oi!

This past weekend was our national holiday long weekend, with Australia Day on Saturday (the 26th and a Monday public holiday). So it only seems fitting to have a look at a few things uniquely Australian today.

The bird in our colour board today is a jacana. Like all Australian animals it is a little on the unique side, verging on eccentric. A bit like the critters on my Wild Things quilt. And it occurs to me, I never did get around to posting photoshoot pictures of my finished Wild Things Australian Tangram quilt from December, did I? So, since it’s on topic, let’s do that today too.

The Scoop on The World’s Strangest Poop!

My daughter wants me to sew appliqué poop onto my latest quilt.

Yup. You just read that. And it’s totally true. My 10 year old daughter is on a mission to have scat immortalised on the quilt I am making for her younger brother. And what is possibly even more astonishing – my 8 year old son has declined the offer.

In my daughter’s defense, it is an animal quilt. And the poop she wants on the quilt is very specific. Wombat scat! And she has a pretty good reason……

December at Island Batik is Whimsical and Wonky….. and Wild!

The challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors for this month is Whimsical and Wonky. Well, that pretty much sums up all my quilts…. so would you believe I had the hardest time settling on an idea for this challenge? The hardest time!

But I now have a plan I’m happy with. And I’ve started! I think it should be fun. 🙂

Most importantly…. it will be a project for my son who is starting to feel a little left out because his sister keeps claiming all my quited creations that are too girly for him.

In July I received this pack of 10″ squares of “Wild Things” from Island Batik to use in my role as Ambassador. My boy, who has just turned eight, thinks all the animal skin prints are terrific… especially the sssssnake sssskins…….. sssssss!!!! 🙂 So that is a good ssssssstart.

Colour Inspiration Tuesday: Vintage Port Adelaide

Vintage Inspiration from an Adventure Day to Historic Port Adelaide

On the weekend, our Joey Scouts (6-8yo) had a transport-themed adventure day. We went on a bus, then a tram, then a train, then a boat. Then we went to the Aviation Museum to look at planes, and finally took two more trains back. I don’t know about the kids, but by the time we got home, I was exhausted!

The major destinations of our day were located in historic Port Adelaide, one of the oldest parts of our city. Since the Island Batik Ambasador challenge for April is Vintage Inspired quilts, and Port Adelaide is dripping with history, I was on high alert for some vintage inspiration!
