Valentine’s Hearts Destash Project – Quick Update

Valentine's Heart Quilt

The Evolution of a Destash Quilt

I have been wondering what to do with the scrap improv heart blocks I made last month. I want to make a smallish quilt, but one still large enough to be useful. Perhaps something for a romantic picnic or a snuggle on the couch with a movie. But nothing I planned seemed to suit the improv hearts I have already made and fallen in love with. The whole planning thing kept resulting in designs I felt were too formal, something which these pretty hearts definitely are not!

Then, the other day I had my dozen improv heart blocks out while I was also working on my daughter’s Regatta quilt backing, and I noticed how lovely they looked with the fabrics she had chosen. At first I just scattered the hearts over the top of the pieced batik strips to look at how the colours worked. But then I had an “Ahhh Ha!” moment. It wasn’t just the colour combinations that I liked, but also the combination of the improv placing of the heart blocks over the pieced strips. So……

I am now making a second batik strip set for my Valentine’s Heart quilt that is much the same as the Regatta backing! I am even using the offcuts from the Regatta quilt. Yay! I will applique the improv heart blocks over the pieced strips rather than trying to set them into the quilt. And just to be different… I think I am going to make this quilt into a quillow….. a quilt that folds into its own pocket to make a pillow. Then it can be stored on the couch or easily taken on picnics. I haven’t made a quillow before. I am quite looking forward to having a go at this. A quillow has been on my list of things to try for a while.

Apart from that, this week has disappeared in secret sewing and paperwork! Have you been over to Clever Chameleon on facebook lately? This week I shared a sneak peek of my Galentine’s Day project. Facebook is currently the best place to get behind the scenes looks at what is coming up on Clever Chameleon. It is also a great place to share your Beary Colourful bears. Look at the blue bear Ria made!

I love the fabric Ria has chosen for her bear. And her rocket appliqué. Thanks for sharing Ria!

And Susan from Desert Sky Quilting shared with me that SpaceX held their Falcon Heavy rocket launch this week…. don’t you think they have great timing?! Or perhaps they just muscling into the media coverage of my blue bear pattern release? hahahahaha.

That’s it from me until Tuesday – Galentine’s Day and my first Island Batik Ambassador project. Although there will be no Island Batik batiks in sight on Tuesday…… my box of Island Batik goodies is apparently still taking in the sights of Los Angeles. Meh! But I have prepared you a little something anyway…. and it’s something a bit silly – to make you smile. But you’ll have to come back on Tuesday to find out what! See you then.

  3. Yeah, that is great timing with the SpaceX thing. I have my bear’s pieces all traced out on fusible and ready to put down, but I still have to go “dumpster diving” in my scrap bins to find the blues I want. 🙂

  4. I love when inspiration happens! You’re right–those scrappy improv heart blocks look wonderful on those pieced strips! Thanks for linking to my Wednesday Wait Loss.
